bringing Live Theatre to your community

BareBones Youth Theatre

When the BareBones Theatre Company was formed in the summer of 2004, the founding members had no immediate thought of forming a youth section. Indeed the five people involved were only too well aware of the task they faced in establishing the adult group. However, within weeks of declaring their intent to form the touring company, they were inundated with requests from the members of youth groups with which they, as individuals, had had some dealings. When the number of such enquiries reached around forty, it became clear that there was indeed some local need and BareBones Youth Theatre was born.

One of our founders, Dickie Worrall, had considerable experience in the organisation of youth companies and immediately set up a comprehensive programme of tuition and theatrical activities which would expand the skills and abilities of the young people whilst entertaining them for two hours on each Saturday morning. Two basic principles were placed at the very root of the group:

  1. Tutors would have a solid practical background in theatrical direction.
  2. Skills acquired would be exercised in live public performance.

Our youth membership ranges in age from nine, (our minimum age limit), to sixteen, with, remarkably, as many boys as girls.

With a major full length production, a County One-Act Festival entry and a Shakespeare summer workshop each year, BareBones Youth has quickly become a well supported and respected part of the local amateur theatre scene.

HAMLET Prince of Denmark

by William Shakespeare adapted by Dave Baldwin

The weather once more favoured our annual open-air Shakespeare production in the grounds of Bishopswood House. Hamlet, being the Bard's longest play, presented perhaps the biggest challenge to date for our young actors. In order to preserve all of the characters and the complete plot of the work, the adaptation had a running time of just under an hour and a half, which is rather longer than our usual summer offering. Nevertheless twenty-two young actors, playing thirty-two beautifully costumed characters, were undeterred and maintained a cracking pace to bring the piece to its gory conclusion just before the light faded. An audience of around one hunded and fifty followed the play in wrapt attention throughout, many saying that this was our best Shakespeare to date. A bucket collection for the Ross-on-Wye based charity, HOPE raised £250.
