Shirley Valentine
by Willy Russell
The Production
When we hear the name "Shirley Valentine" we immediately think of the film starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conte but the film was an adaption of a highly successful play by Willy Russell.
The play chronicles a few weeks in the life of a middle aged mother of grown-up children who feels trapped in a life of humdrum domesticity, and longs to fulfill her dream of 'drinking a glass of wine in the country where the grape is grown'. There can be few women who have seen this play without recognizing something of themselves in the central character. Willy Russell has an uncanny capacity for identifying with women and their emotional lives. He seems to be able to see life from a female point of view in plays like 'Educating Rita' and 'Blood Brothers'.
Shirley Valentine is a play that is not often performed, because it makes huge demands upon the actress playing Shirley. The BareBones Theatre Company however, rose to the challenge of the piece and triumphed unreservedly.
