Duck Variations & The Problem
by David Mamet & A R Gurney Jnr
The Production
These two plays constituted our adult entry to the 2006 Herefordshire Drama Festival. Our Youth Section also entered the Festival with an excerpt from their February production of Our Day Out by Willy Russell.
Our efforts were crowned with great success as Duck Variations carried off the David Garrick cup as the best production and The Problem took the Wye Cup in third place. The two actors in 'Ducks' were jointly awarded the Belmont trophy as 'best actors' and its director took the Bill Aston Best Producer cup. The final icing on the Bare Bones cake was the award of the Janis Lewer trophy to Chris Kear for the best performance in a youth production.
As winners of the festival, the cast and crew of Duck Variations then moved into the next round of this 'All England' compettion and performed the play again in the Western Division Final at Netherton Arts Centre on 8th April. Whilst not winning that round they qualified to compete at the Central Division Final in Dormston Mill Theatre, Sedgley for a place amongst the last five in the country at the All England Final. This proved to be a step too far for this simple little play. However we are proud to have taken this fascinating piece of Mamet as far as we did!
