Willy Russell
The Production
Willy Russell's evergreen play was commissioned by the RSC in 1980 and has been in continuous production worldwide ever since. The highly successful film version starring Julie Walters and Michael Caine gave greater prominence to the comedy aspects of the piece but the original stage play blends comedy, pathos and social comment to produce a rounded portrait of two disparate characters searching for fullfilment. This tour was extended with two new 'once-off' venues. A single performance was given at the Larruperz Centre in Ross-on-Wye in aid of the local Playgroup and two performances took place in the small hall at Gorsley in an attempt to raise the profile of that community facility. This tour also saw our first venture into the pretty Wyeside village of Brockweir where we were invited to perform in their annual arts festival. All in all, a very successful production which was well received wherever we went.
