The Memory of Water (March - April 2007)
by Shelagh Stephenson
The Production
When Mary, Teresa and Catherine meet to organise and attend their mother's funeral, they come to their old family home. A home full of memories good and bad. A home where they'd exercised their early hopes fears and ambitions. Now, so many years later, they've grown apart but those memories are here to remind them that they share an irremovable family trace. They also share a lack of success in relationships with one 'difficult' marriage, one hopelessly one-sided romance, and one futureless illicit affair. Despite such seemingly angst-ridden characters this is a comedy. With great wit and moments of almost farcical situation, the laughs just keep coming. This was the playwright's first play and won her the Olivier Award as the Best Comedy of 2000.
'Combines a flair for witty dialogue with a relish for the dynamics of theatre. A mistress of comic anguish'. The Guardian
