Faith Healer (June - August 2007)
by Brian Friel
The Production
Frank, an itinerant Irish Faith Healer, tours Wales and Scotland with his long suffering wife and his put upon manager. He is tortured by self doubt and eases his inner turmoil with whiskey. When he at long last returns to his native Ireland there is a brief period during which he beleives that he has come home to a new beginning and a new acceptance. His belief is short lived.
The play was something of a departure for Bare Bones. The piece is unlike anything we had previously presented. The format is simply four monologues for three players none of whom meet on stage. The bleak story is told from the Faith Healer's point of view: from his wife's point of view and from that of his manager. The stories differ in detail as each character edits hiostory and refines his or her experience to sheild and protect. The language is poetic and the story emotionally involving but the piece calls for total concetration and involvement from the audience.
Faith Healer is now recognised as one of the masterpieces of Ireland's greatest living playwright.
