A Delicate Balance
by Edward Albee
The Production

Written in 1966, Edward Albee’s play, “A Delicate Balance”, is a wry, and at times cynical comment on the modern family. Whilst I’m sure he’s not claiming that this is a typical family, the conflicting demands of friends and relatives, the easy divorce and the alcohol dependence are increasingly prevalent. His observations are about American society in 1966 but such is the timelessness of its subject that when the play undertook a national tour in 2000, Albee needed to change just two words. The 'Delicate Balance' of the title is not only that equilibrium that maintains families despite the stresses of modern living; it is also the fine line between sanity and madness which is the constant preocupation of Agnes who is forced to serve as the head of this damaged family
