Encouraged by the success of "September in the Rain" in 1984, Godber wrote "Happy Jack" in 1985. Both plays chronicle events in the lives of Jack and Liz Munroe, the playwright's grandparents.
Whilst the first play concentrates entirely upon the couples annual holidays in Blackpool, Happy Jack is a miscellany of events and happening in their life together. A life filled with hard physical work, simple pleasures and, though it may at times be difficult to believe, love. Godber re-enacts the episodes with great humour and obvious affection for these two family figures from his youth.
